We know we’re not the first people to tell you this, but spending your free time away from screens and social media has the capability to do incredible things for your mental health. Putting down our screens, even for a few hours, can help reduce stress and anxiety, improve our relationships, help us sleep better, and enhance our focus and creativity. However, we also know that this is much easier said than done.
With the February break coming up for many students and families across Long Island, we know it can be tempting to get under a blanket and scroll the day away. While some of that is certainly welcome, we wanted to suggest a few local spots that could get the whole family out of the house and away from your devices while you have some extra time on your hands.
The Whaling Museum & Education Center - Cold Spring Harbor
Did you know that the first whaling companies in North America were founded right here on Long Island? Located right down the road from our offices, the Whaling Museum & Education Center has dedicated itself to sharing Long Island’s rich whaling history since 1936. The museum is home to thousands of unique artifacts, including tools, models, skeletal bones, and a 19th century whaleboat (with all of its original gear!). This spot is a great way for you and your family to immerse yourselves in local history- we encourage you to give it a visit!
Main Street Board Game Cafe - Huntington
Endless games, good food, friendly staff- it almost feels too good to be true. But luckily, the Main Street Board Game Cafe is very real and very close by! Right in the heart of Huntington Village, the cafe is home to over 300 board games you can rent and play (with staff to help you decode some of the more difficult ones) while you enjoy delicious snacks and drinks. Their catalog ranges from advanced modern strategy games to simple classics for you to enjoy with your little ones. The cafe also hosts several fun events on a weekly or monthly basis, such as a puzzle race or Mahjong led by a professional instructor! Stop by to play some of your old-time favorites or pick out something new to try!
Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve - Lloyd Harbor
We know it’s cold out, but if you’re a fan of the outdoors, we highly recommend paying a visit to Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve. This Lloyd Harbor park is home to impressive forests, meadows, and waterways that are sure to bring you a sense of calm and enjoyment. It’s the perfect landscape for walking, running, biking, or even cross-country skiing if the weather permits. You’re not going to regret going to take a look around and getting some energy out.
Catpurrccinos - Huntington
If you or anyone you love is a cat person, we have just the spot for you. Catpurrccinos cat-cafe in Huntington Village is a temporary home for dozens of cats seeking a forever family. Now, you don’t have to take a new friend home with you if you visit. You’re welcome to just stop by the cafe to try any of their cat-themed drinks or food items, and then head into the “cattery” to spend some quality time petting and playing with some new feline friends! They appreciate any time or money you can contribute to the cause, and we’re sure you won’t regret the time you spend with them!
Long Island Whale & Seal Watching - Freeport, NY
Speaking of spending time with animals, Long Island Whale & Seal Watching offers exciting cruises to explore the wildlife on our shores. Focusing on Long Island’s seal population during this time of year, the two-hour trips give you a unique opportunity to see the animals in their natural habitat. The boats also offer food, drinks, and a heated cabin to give you a break from the cold- what more could you need? Children above the age of one are welcome on these cruises, so you can bring the whole family to enjoy!
Claytime - Huntington
This recommendation goes out to any artists you have in your circle. Claytime Huntington is a pottery studio that allows you to paint and decorate your own custom piece of pottery. You can choose from a wide range of their hand-made pottery products to paint, ranging from decorative to functional pieces. Their talented staff is always available to give you any tips and tricks you and your family might need during your creative process. They also offer hand building pottery classes if you’re interested in making your piece from scratch! Plus, if any parents out there are in need of a night away from the kids, Thursday nights are reserved for adults only. We highly recommend checking them out!
Long Island Aquarium - Riverhead
If you’re from Long Island and haven’t been to the Long Island Aquarium, you are severely missing out. This island staple is home to hundreds of critters and creatures that you and your family can observe and interact with. Ranging from sea lions to porcupines to sharks, the population of this aquarium has a little something for everyone. Some of the special experiences they offer are encounters with penguins, selfies with sea lions, or even a shark dive if you’re feeling brave! Their exhibits and experiences cater to a wide range of ages, so you’re sure to find something you and your kids can enjoy together!
NY Axe Throwing Range - Farmingdale, Huntington, Selden, Westbury, Williamsburg
If you have kids over the age of ten- or just a group of adults looking to let off some steam- look no further than NY Axe Throwing Range. This place can have you throwing axes like a pro in no time (with the help of actual professionals there to teach and guide you the whole time). Their lanes have digital targets and games that make for fun for the whole family. Check out any of their locations throughout Long Island, including Farmingdale, Huntington, and Westbury!
Long Island Children’s Museum - Garden City
The Long Island Children’s Museum is the perfect place to take your kids for a day of fun and learning while they’re on school break. The museum offers interactive exhibits, programs, and performances that encourage your little ones to use their imaginations and explore their interests. Some highlights include their climbing sculpture, bubble room, and pattern studio- your kids will thank you for all the fun they will have here!
RPM Go-Kart Racing - Farmingdale
Our last recommendation is for adrenaline junkies of all ages. This Farmingdale go-kart racing track is just the place for you and your family to get your energy out while school’s out! The venue is also home to an arcade, virtual reality experiences, and a snack bar, so it can work out to be an entire day of fun!
However you choose to spend your time this February break, we hope you find something enjoyable for you and your family. Winter can be a wonderful time to slow down, reconnect, and create lasting memories together. It’s easy to get caught up in the digital world, but stepping away from screens—even for a little while—can open the door to new experiences, whether it’s exploring nature, trying out a creative activity, or simply savoring quality time with loved ones.
It can be tough to pull ourselves away from screens, but hopefully these local recommendations will ignite a spark in you to explore some new options for your break. If you are looking for additional strategies to reduce technology use during this week (or any week), don’t forget to check out our blog on UNPLUGGING. Whatever you choose, we hope you have fun and make the most of this winter break!
